That was the only way I could get around to believing it, really. "Even God thinks I should go back to Hell" seemed like a more believable Winchester thought process than "God has decided to help us out of the goodness of his heart," and I'm pretty sure it's something Sam wouldn't share with Dean. ;)
And yes, Lucifer might have harped on the 'I'll never lie to you' thing a lot, but he has no problem lying by omission...
