Yeah, it really is a pity to miss out on the things that make it such a great piece of work. Still, I guess if somebody doesn't want to think about it that deeply, that's their prerogative. (I agree with you on finding new things all the time though. Definitely not a read-once-and-discard kind of novel.)
I kind of understand the impulse to make breakups OMG DRAMATIC in fiction, because, well, drama, but I can't help feeling it would be incredibly out of character in this case.
