Mother looks up at him at last, and for a moment he can’t read the expression on her thin face. (She’d be a bonny one, wi’ enough food.) Finally it resolves: unkind smile, sharp eyes.
“There’s only one thing you need to learn from them,” she tells him, and nods down at the dead mouse. Its tiny guts have made a dark stain on the floor. “People like me and you? In situations like this, we’re never the cat. So don’t get caught, little mouse.”

Title: Divine Madness

Summary: After the events of 10x09, Dean decides he's too dangerous to be allowed to roam free any longer, let alone to hunt. Sam still seems to think he can be saved, and he knows Cas wants to believe it, too, so rather than trust them to keep him on lockdown, Dean gets himself arrested.
Life on a secure psych ward is... well, not awesome, but Dean can deal. At least, until patients start dying in mysterious ways and he realizes that getting away from hunting is going to be harder than it seemed. It quickly becomes evident that the deaths are supernatural in origin -- but will hunting down the monster mean Dean ends up becoming one himself?

Notes: This is fortkodami, for the Nepal fandomaid auction. I know I've owed it to you for well over a year now, and I can only apologise. I got very attached to this fic idea and I guess I built it up into something Very Important in my head. Being a terrible perfectionist procrastinator, I ended up putting it off because I knew it couldn't live up to the fic that existed in my head. I suck. So, I'm very sorry, but I still hope that there's something here for you to enjoy. <33
The prompt was this quote, which couldn't help make me think of MoC Dean and his post-demon angst: Absolution is a religious idea that is not compatible with liberation. Whatever we have done, we have done. Nothing and no-one can stop us from being the person who has done the worst actions we have taken. I structured this vaguely after the story of Tam Lin, since I know you like a bit of mythology. And I think I might have made demon Dean a little more demonic than he was in canon, but I hope you won't mind. ;)

Phew! I've been living with this fic for what feels like forever, and it's kind of a relief to finally have it done and posted. It's probably the darkest thing I've written in fandom, and definitely the thing I feel most unsure about (though I feel a lot less horrible about it than I did, thanks to frozen_delight's sterling beta work and sensible words. *hugs*)
