Ahhh. This is so very sad, intelligent, and persuasive. Of course John wouldn't take him back so quickly----that's almost a given, for me. But you take this one step further than any post-Reichenbach story I've read, and show that even after John does give in, that they really can't go back to what they were. John will never adore and admire Sherlock with unmixed feelings, ever again. Sherlock will miss that so much.
And dear God, the place you leave each of them: Sherlock so desperate, trying to suppress the knowledge that Moriarty did win; John, kissing him even as he's thinking that it feels like defeat; and Mycroft's insights that they will only have a shadow of what they once did.
This is wonderful writing, and I'm going to try hard to prevent it from becoming my headcanon. But it's so very persuasive. Thank you.
