Maybe it has something to do with the voice he hears in his dreams...

He can help his friends again – and when Dean’s lies blow up in his face and Sam is once again left hovering between life and death, Cas is happy to be useful. But his abilities keep getting stronger, and they might just be more than a human brain can handle.

He finds Cas looking right in his eyes and swallows hard. Tries to take his hand back, but Cas catches it and holds on tight. He pulls Dean in closer, and something kindles in his eyes, then. Not a reprimand, and not just the waning adrenaline kick of a hunt. Heat and want and the offer of reassurance all mixed up together.
Okay, so maybe this is a different kind of reminder. A reminder that Cas is here, with him, right now; that they’re both alive and kicking, give or take a bum knee. They haven’t lost each other yet.
Or: Dean is injured and has to sit out a hunt; sulks about it; eventually there is sex.

Dean has been captured by a trio of vamps in Purgatory. His best hope of escape lies with two beings who can’t stand each other, working together to get him out. So, that’s no hope at all then...
Why you should read it: Okay, I'm a little prejudiced, because this was written in response to a prompt of mine at thehoodie_time wishlist meme, but that doesn't matter because IT'S WONDERFUL. This fic has one of the most perfect renditions of Dean's inner monologue I've ever read -- snarky and blackly hilarious, even when he's half-dead from blood loss. Cas and Benny's constant bickering is brilliant, too, though I pity poor Dean having to listen to a whole year of it! But it's touching, in among the humour, and has woozy-from-blood-loss Dean being heartbreaking surprised that his friends could put their differences aside long enough to rescue him, plus one of the most wonderfully astute observations about Dean's choice of Purgatory companions I've ever read (you'll know it when you see it.) This is a real gem. ♥
