Let me get this straight...so in less than a couple of pages, Dan "successfully" abandons Laurie with their possible child, moves in/works for the man he has every reason to hate and through both the comic/movie OBVIOUSLY HATES, and then has an affair with him?

What are you smoking and can I have some.

Yep. All that hugging and still being friends years after the Keene Act? Obvious hate. *sigh*

I once wrote RPS (*cringe*) for a Romanian dancepop group (*double cringe*) and got an entire series of shrieking comments about them not being gay OMG.

The person's profile did contain a lot of 'Eww, there are GURLS in my fandoms bringing their GERMS and making them GHEY!' Which, y'know. You always hope that people will grow out of that kind of thing, but sadly I think a lot of them don't.

More like morons than fanboys if you ask me. The whole point of the story is making the situation believable. But what can you expect from someone who clearly understands maybe 5% of what they read, right? "Obvious hate", in caps, haha.

I also take issue with their oversimplified view on fandom members and characters' sexualities, but it's not like they'd listen if you tried to point that out.

Oh, definitely not. There is no real point trying to educate fools on the internet, and trying will only give you a headache. ;)

And yeah, I understand that everyone is entitled to their own take on canon, but, um, I'm really not sure if he read the same GN/saw the same film as I did.

('Fanboys' was the wrong word, really, though sadly this person's behaviour reminds me of a couple of the more rabid people I know IRL. 'Fanbrats' would probably be more appropriate.)

Exactly! Or if he bothered to see anything in it besides the most boringly obvious. (Dan and Laurie get together? No shit, Sherlock? Oh, and I love the "possible child" he just had to throw in; of course that's the only reason the two of them should stay together. *rolls eyes*)

(Yeah, I usually go for fanbrats in these cases. Fangirls and fanboys seem to have a wider range of meanings besides being an immature twat, the way I see them used.)

Yeah, it's definitely still annoying. Expressing your opinion on your own corner of the interweb is fine, however wrong it may be, but seeking out other people who are happily minding their own fannish business in order to rudely preach at them? Not so fine.

And yeah, it's sad that somebody can only take away the most basic of ideas from such a complex work, really. Having said that, it could be an age thing; I'm fairly sure I missed the more complex themes of a lot of stuff I read in my early teens. ;)

The idea that a break-up has to be the result of one person 'abandoning' the other irritates me, too. It's actually perfectly possible for reasonable adults to end a relationship amicably, without it being anyone's 'fault'! Grr.

(Yeah, that's true. There do seem to be slightly different stereotypes attached to the terms. I shall certainly bear that in mind in future.)

Yeah, the age issue might be fair enough, but he's still being super immature (or maybe I was a thoughtful kid, I don't know). I just don't get why anyone would read the book for this and miss all the really interesting stuff. I've read it twice so far and I keep finding new brilliant things!

That's another good point. I think it would be the more likely way to break up for Dan and Laurie, at least.

(Plus I've noticed that a lot of people apply the terms to themselves just to mean they're excitable or really obsessed. Personally I'd just stick with saying I'm a huge fan, but to each their own.)

Yeah, it really is a pity to miss out on the things that make it such a great piece of work. Still, I guess if somebody doesn't want to think about it that deeply, that's their prerogative. (I agree with you on finding new things all the time though. Definitely not a read-once-and-discard kind of novel.)

I kind of understand the impulse to make breakups OMG DRAMATIC in fiction, because, well, drama, but I can't help feeling it would be incredibly out of character in this case.

(That's true. Hmm, I'd never refer to myself as 'a fangirl', but I guess I do say that I 'fangirl' certain people/things. Hmm.)

It is, but it does seem like a waste of such a great piece of work. But I guess some people just want to say they have "read" it. (That's just what I meant. I love books you're never quite "done" with.)

Yeah, it depends from case to case. With Dan and Laurie, I really don't think they're the type.

(That's what I see most often, exactly. I guess I just don't want to be unfair to anyone who says that by equating fangirl/fanboy with the bratty behaviour, though I've definitely seen that done as well.)

Precisely. If someone manages to miss the point that badly, I have to wonder why they picked this book to read in the first place.

(Well, I think that manner of referring to people like that has been around for a while, so you're hardly to blame. But yeah, it's one of the reasons why I stay away from the terms altogether. Sometimes things could get awkward.)
