“I think I have an idea which one you’ll choose…”
Angelica’s voice is knowing, but watching him sideways she is still surprised by the sudden and desperate longing she sees flare in him. She recognises it for love-light—she’s seen it in the eyes of fools enough in her time, but never this fool, never directed at her—and there’s a dart, quick like a needle-prick, at her core, but if it shows in her face, he doesn’t notice.
She knew then, really, she’ll think, later. A good thing he isn’t the prize she seeks, for here there’s no contest.
